December Update

IMG_0064Dear Friends of MCLC,

Thank you for your support of the Matènwa Community Learning Center. I have just come back from a two-week trip to Haiti. I went to give two seminars in Port Au Prince on an excellent children’s rights program called Education Is A Conversation. This is a series of 15 short stories that bring out the reality of abuse that hundreds of thousands of children are experiencing in Haiti. We piloted this program two years ago in several adult literacy centers. We have begun to see positive results. Adults are discussing abuse and feeling empowered to take steps to protect their children. (

Though brief, I also visited MCLC, bringing another set of Mother Tongue books from the Fayerweather School.

We hired a second gardener this year so the garden is looking even more glorious. In the garden we presently have new beds of cabbage, carrots, and turnips. The preschool classes have started an orange tree nursery. The 8th graders are helping the preschoolers by filling their seedling bags with soil.

Our local arts initiative is going very well. We have 20 students and 20 adults weaving shoulder bags, food plate covers, wastebaskets, and flower holders out of local non-plastic materials. basket62[1]

Thank you again for your support. May you experience joy and peace during this holiday season.
